Rani of Jhansi in the Battle Field
A collage by Shrikant Apte
Bravery and valour of Rani of Jhansi during 1857 is a subject of legend of modern India. She attacked the British in a hand-to-hand fight, where swords clashed and men rolled down. The Rani personally killed several of the enemy including Colonel Turnbull.
In spite of having a small and poorly equipped army, she defeated the British troops. She could be defeated only after British gathered a much larger force with support from some princely states of India.
